Meet Lana Berg

Where are you from and how did you end up in Melbourne?

I am originally from Alberta, Canada and decided to make Melbourne my home after falling in love with the city on a previous visit.  I do adore my homeland but never was fully enthusiastic about Canadian winters aside from the snowboarding, ice skating, and of course, hockey.

What is something you’ve done that you really loved or that you are really proud of.

Something that I have both loved and am proud of is the ability to travel independently on my own. I have learned so much about myself while exploring the landscapes, cultures, and architecture of over 90 countries. You develop a deep appreciation for the wonderful similarities and differences that make this world an amazing place.

Flat white, cappuccino, or long black?

As a newcomer to this wonderful country, I initially made the error of asking directions to the nearest Starbucks. Having now lived in Melbourne for awhile and being exposed to the fantastic coffee culture here, I have definitely been reformed. There is nothing better than enjoying a long black in a lovely cafe surrounded with good people and good conversation.

Favorite Melbourne “hidden gem.”

I don't know if you would consider it a "hidden" gem being several hectares in size but my favourite place in Melbourne is the Royal Botanic Gardens. The beauty and tranquillity of the gardens makes it an ideal setting for self reflection and recharging the soul.

What’s in your purse?

I likely fall into a minority category of women when it comes to the contents of my purse. I carry around only the necessities - phone, wallet, pen, mints, and of course lipstick.

What’s your secret to happiness?

When it comes to the secret to happiness, I like the quote from Elizabeth Gilbert.  "Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings."

What is your most treasured possession?

My most treasured possession is a painting created for me by my beautiful 6 year old niece. It is one of a few things I packed when I moved here from Canada and it holds a special place in my living room....and in my heart.

Favourite city in the world?

When you travel a lot, the most common question I get asked is what is my favourite city in the world. I find it to be a very difficult query as the most ordinary place can become extraordinary when shared with the right people. That being said, if I had to choose a city, other than Melbourne, it would probably be Venice. My favourite memory being a gondola ride around the waterways with amazing friends, lots of laughter, and a great bottle of red.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned in life?

My favourite lesson in life quote is "If you're looking for that one person who will change your life, look in the mirror."

Outside of work, what are you most passionate about?

I am extremely passionate about health and fitness. I find that a good workout at the gym, an invigorating run, or a bike ride is vital to keeping myself balanced and centred. The biggest asset you will ever have is your health.
